Solution Architect

The Solution Architect role develops and communicates the design of application systems and solutions within this organisation. This role directly supports the change capability within Information Technology and will be involved with and responsible for delivering technology change.

The Solution Architect will be producing Architecture Descriptions, these will typically contain views represented using relevant Visio stencils (mainly Azure stencils). The Solution Architect will tailor the Architecture Descriptions to suit the given context, ensuring the views adequately represent concerns for stakeholders.

The Solution Architect will research into reference architectures and patterns and base solutions of suitable reference architectures and patterns. You will collect both functional and non functional requirements from stakeholders and represent them in the Architecture Descriptions. The Architecture Descriptions will include a register of decisions for each solution. You will present solutions to stakeholders as well their internal board for review.

Technical Environment:

This organisation has a predominately Microsoft based technology environment, with bespoke applications written in .NET and middleware including SQL Server and IIS. The organisation is currently rearchitecting its solutions around Azure cloud services, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. They envisage some bespoke solutions and functions being entirely replaced by SaaS such as Dynamics 365 Customer Service.

The Team:

The architecture team consists of 2 Solution Architect's and an Enterprise Architect (all permanent staff). The Solution Architect's report into the Enterprise Architect and use a Kanban approach. The architect will work on initiatives that make up the technology road map and be assigned to delivery project work and teams to provide and architecture capability. The team has been highly successful with recognition at the executive board.

The Role:

The Solution Architect role is very much a communications role, the architect will discuss topics at varying levels of details to a range of stakeholders. It is essential for the Solution Architect to establish and maintain professional, positive and effective relationships with stakeholders. The main skill sets which would be beneficial are:

  • Cloud experience (preferably Azure)
  • A software development background (ideally .NET)
  • Experience with an analysis or design framework
  • Experience with a modelling notation used for software application design such as Unified Modelling Language or similar.
  • Strong practical skills across the Microsoft Office suite
  • Highly proficient with Visio or similar diagramming tool
  • Familiar with Sparx EA and Archi
